**NS Roleplay Symposium 2017**
LOCATION: Symposium Hall
TOPIC: They're Here: Modball Panel (Oddball #3)
TIME: 8 PM Eastern Friday, July 14th
How do you roast a goat? Use a knife to trim away excess verbosity. Brine him in salt and vinegar to tenderize him. Drop him into a red pot. Set him on a panel and roast for one hour.
Welcome to the final panel of the 2017 Rolplay Symposium. I am Cerillium (Cer), your roastmaster and one of the Senior P2TM RP Mentors.
The audience will pose questions relating to the general insight of a Moderator's daily activities, particularly for those issues relating to roleplaying and the roleplaying community, as well as just insights in general.
Mentor Panelists and Mod Roastee, please introduce yourselves.

Kyrusia - Today at 8:00 PM
'Ello! I'm Kyru, Game Moderator, Director of the Mentor Program, and an N&I RP Mentor.
To get some basic questions aside, I was appointed as a Forum Moderator on March 9th, 2016 (or thereabouts). I was appointed a Game Moderator on September 11, 2016, if I remember correctly, though I do not believe it was announced until September 14th.
Before then, I had served as an II Roleplay Mentor (what became "N&I Roleplay Mentor") since 2014.
Zark - Today at 8:00 PM
Hello, I'm Zark, I've been here a few times already
Cer - Today at 8:01 PM
Greetings Overgoat and Lich Cat.
Alright Kyru - What exactly do you do as a Mod, other than harvesting souls?
(This will be a slow panel. Kyru likes warp his answers into novels)(edited)
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:03 PM
Hi I'm Min, P2TM Minty, I am literally helping cook so I'll be back and forth
Cer - Today at 8:03 PM
Greetings Civet.
(Notice the animal theme this evening?)
Kyrusia - Today at 8:04 PM
General purpose of a Mod is helping maintain a level of order and "civility" as defined by the Terms and Conditions of Use (what all players agree to upon creating a nation), FAQ, and OSRS.
As for what I do in practice: first thing I tend to do is check our private discussion area, check the Mentor private discussion area, check the Moderation forum for any unresolved reports that can use my attention (and the megathreads); then I commence my "rounds," checking most boards for any immediate issues, checking threads that have a tendency to be intense or hot-spots for problem behaviors, and general to check for maintenance issues.
After that, I check the gameside for any issues that may need resolving that I can help with.
Cer - Today at 8:04 PM
Do you actually have time to roleplay?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:05 PM
Not as much as I'd like to, but yes. Moderators - like Mentors - are volunteers. We do not have set "schedules" or "shifts"; we work when we can and when we want to. For most of us that means dedicating some amount of time each day, and making ourselves available in case our help is needed for an emergency.(edited)
Cer - Today at 8:05 PM
What's the weirdest thing(s) you've come across in your time as a Mod?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:07 PM
While I won't go into specifics, I'm always amazed by the things the general playerbase think we can do or can resolve. We get our fair share of requests to resolve issues that... Frankly, we have no business resolving and/or no way to readily resolve. This is often the case when two players may know one another in real life and have a spat IRL, and somehow feel we can - or should - punish them for calling them a "meanie butt" IRL, but nowhere on the site.
Beyond that: the amount of stuff over the PG-13 Rule that people think is acceptable. Some of that shit can be... Wild.
Cer - Today at 8:07 PM
We couldn't help but notice you stated that you were officially made moderator on September 11. Was this a unfortunate co-incidence or the work of aliens?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:08 PM
Not the first time that's come up. I believe it was just coincidence. Players have made some less-than-sensitive jokes about it before.
Cer - Today at 8:08 PM
What has been the most enjoyable part of being a moderator?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:10 PM
Working in the Mentor Program as a general liaison and helping provide assistance to players who truly need it. This is a largely thankless job, and we all go into it sort of knowing that, but it never hurts our feelings when someone takes a moment to go, "Hey. They're people, too. They see shit they probably don't want to see, and take time out of their day to look at it and keep others from suffering the same often... mind-numbingly horrific shit some people try and pull."
Cer - Today at 8:10 PM
Was there ever that 'one particularly shitty day' on the site where the mod team was overwhelmed by bullshit and stress? C'mon now, we all know Mentors bitch up a storm. Do Mods go batshit behind the scenes in their secret lair?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:13 PM
Anytime a thread trawl is needed.
Kidding aside, some of us like doing those, but they are a bit of a, "Throw them at the new Mod," task. First few weeks as an FM, I did my fair share. They're never fun to me, especially when people get to complaining about the amount of time they sometimes take.
And yes, we are people, too, but even then, to be frank, most of our playerbase are exceptionally well behaved. We're lucky in that regard. We take care not to try and misrepresent the few problem spots as some expression of the entire playerbase.
Cer - Today at 8:13 PM
Why exactly are the forums periodically flooded with ad bots spamming in Chinese? While there are English adbots on the site, which isn't the number of them higher in comparison to all the Chinese ones?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:14 PM
To be honest? No friggin' clue. I do know that "adbot" is a misnomer.
Our onsite "Nation Creation" serves as a very effective, very practical Captcha - which is why you often see dismissals of suggestions for us to use a Captcha feature. "Adbots" are, nine times out of ten, an actual user being paid pennies on the dollar to manually C&P spam, not a script.
Cer - Today at 8:14 PM
How did you end up with a goat theme-thing? What happened to the dragonfly?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:15 PM
I just wanted a new flag. One of our Mentors, Santh, made a joke about the "Overgoat," a character/pet in the game Fallen London. It took off from there.
Originally I was trying to make it look like a bull, but it got warped in Inkscape half-way through. It has since stuck.(edited)
Cer - Today at 8:15 PM
It's not a bad theme, IMHO.
How drunk are you currently, and how drunk do you plan on getting tonight?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:16 PM
I'm not at the moment, and - to be honest - hadn't really considered it. I'm sure there's still a backlog of things I need to handle, both on NS and off (on top of the Sympo, for those who don't know, I've been caring for a six-week old puppy).
Cer - Today at 8:17 PM
Ready for a tough one from a P2TM denizen?
What was up with that May stuff when you were first jacketed? Why did you have a go at our guide?
(Note: not my question. The asker is a coward.)
Kyrusia - Today at 8:19 PM
I know some P2TMers were upset by this; this is understandable.
Fact of the matter is, sometimes, boards just get overlooked. When that happens, problems or sources of contrition or things that the rules and board outlines never intended get overlooked with them, leading to problem behaviors or things we would not have considered acceptable had they been given more attention to become entrenched.
We make mistakes. Sometimes, those mistakes just need fixing. As the new mod on the block with a tenure in roleplaying, on top of my role as Director of the Mentor Program, that sort of fell into my lap.
Cer - Today at 8:19 PM
Has there been an instance in which something you saw in the course of your Modly Duties (TM) made you literally laugh out loud, and can you tell us about it?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:20 PM
Oh boy...
Without getting too much into details here, it is always funny when a DOS returns, sneaks through, and decides to boast. Sometimes these boasts are just painful to read; othertimes, they're so over the top and so far out of left field that one cannot help but read them as poorly-executed comedy.
We handle them like all the rest, wiping the board clean of them.(edited)
Cer - Today at 8:21 PM
WHAT TYPE OF PUPPY IS IT?? (People did request pictures earlier this week, IIRC.)
Kyrusia - Today at 8:21 PM
Australian Shepherd.
Cer - Today at 8:22 PM
Any favorite type of modly duty (other than the Mentor program)?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:24 PM
I wouldn't say it's my "favorite," but I seem to get an inordinate amount of reports for plagiarism thrown my way that I have to handle.
I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding, though. Mods don't enjoy punishing people. We just don't. To us, it's like any other job or responsibility: we're here to uphold the rules, and we do such. Sometimes that means deploying the Ominous Redtextâ„¢.
Really, my "favorite" is when I don't have to punish anyone - where I just have to loom ominously and players take our advice, take a step back, and go, "Hey. There was no need for us to go at eachother like we did."
Cer - Today at 8:24 PM
Other than having to deal with Swith's rambling GHRs and Malt's dirty socks, was there ever a hard time where you thought to yourself that being a mod was too difficult and you had doubts about it?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:26 PM
When time gets tight. Time, for me, is always my largest source of stress, not people. Like most Mods, Mentors, etc., I have real-world responsibilities I have to handle; they come first, but I despise leaving things "unfinished" or "unresolved" on NS, so I will push myself to the point I get aggravated and have to remember, "It's just the Internet."
Remember: we're just players. We're prone to our own faults.
Cer - Today at 8:26 PM
Are you aware of whether or not [v] asks the mods how they wish to be portrayed in the Mod Olympics? Any personal preference for yourself?
By the way, if you don't take some golds, we will find you and we will be most stern.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:27 PM
Y'all should read some of the Mod Lair logs that Reppy periodically posts. That's where, I believe, most of our characterization comes from.
...Thinking on it, that means I'm likely to be portrayed as a goat, or an overtly sexual avocado... Great.
Cer - Today at 8:27 PM
Excluding adspammers and the like, what's the fastest you would say a brand new nation/player has gotten a DEAT? A DoS? (Only time needed)
Kyrusia - Today at 8:29 PM
Fastest? Within the first day they show themselves.
Folks, if you're here to troll and you get nuked as a troll account or given an immediate ban... Don't immediately come back and repeat the behavior. If you really show us you're not going to behave, we have no great incentive to let you stick around. Bypassing bans or repeatedly making troll puppets, only to have them nuked? Quick way to find yourself DOS'd - especially if you keep doing it.
Cer - Today at 8:29 PM
Some Mentors have been very inactive. [Panel Mod clarification for audience: Mentors do have lives and occasionally go on leave.] Will we see new Mentors appointed to N&I and P2TM in the near future?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:30 PM
Near future? It's a possibility. Beyond that, I won't comment.
Cer - Today at 8:30 PM
Will we ever see a Mod appointed from P2TM? Someone active in the community?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:31 PM
We periodically give-out calls when we feel we need new Moderators. Players can also provide nominations; instructions on how to do such are found on the Moderation board in the "all about mods" sticky.
Cer - Today at 8:31 PM
What were your thoughts when they first approached you and asked if you wanted to be a Mod?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:32 PM
"Is this a joke?" Because it had been a running joke since the latter days of NSSanc.
Beyond that, once I realized it wasn't a joke, I took a bit to think about it and, obviously, accepted. I don't think it'll be any surprise to anyone that Moderators, in general, have to have a certain level of overt self-confidence in order to even believe they could do the job.
Cer - Today at 8:32 PM
We have a lamb/sheep (Blaat), we have a boat (Monitor), and we have a goat (Kyru): What are the others?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:33 PM
Tsar is generally a cat. Fris is a religion (George Carlin fans should recognize that). Mall is a shark. Reppy is a robo-ninja. Sedg is Sedg. Uh... Probably someone I'm forgetting, but there y' go.
Cer - Today at 8:34 PM
When a Mod has a conflict of interest and bows out of Moderating a panel, and someone else steps in and makes a judgement they might not agree with, can that Mod appeal and ask for a second/third opinion?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:34 PM
Transnapistan is a walking typo.
Cer - Today at 8:34 PM
Trans is a god in their own right, tho.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:36 PM
We have a defined set of ethics we are required to uphold during out duties; that should be a surprise to no one.
If a Mod bows-out of a case due to a conflict of interest or the potential appearance of one, that is the end of their involvement in it. We bow-out when we sincerely feel we cannot or should not be involved. In such cases, however, usually most of the Moderation staff are involved anyway, making a request for further review sort of moot.
Cer - Today at 8:36 PM
Are any of the Mod team RP'ers also?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:37 PM
Yes. There are also just general writers.
Cer - Today at 8:37 PM
What is the most satisfying part of being a mod?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:37 PM
Looking onsite and not seeing a major crisis having broken-out in a field you're mostly involved in. :stuck_out_tongue:
Cer - Today at 8:37 PM
As you are also a Mentor, may we open this up for Mentor questions as well?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:38 PM
Suuuure.
Cer - Today at 8:38 PM
MintMod and Fellow Mints: On NS, what is a mentor usually expected to do on a daily basis?
Short answer: we have a guide posted. :stuck_out_tongue:
Kyrusia - Today at 8:39 PM
I know I generally perform my Mentor rounds like my Mod rounds. I keep abreast of things in our NOT SO THUPER THEKRIT board, answer TGs from players (or Mentors) needing help, check-in on the stickies and community threads to see if something needs answering or someone needs assistance.
It's pretty straight-forward, really.
Zark - Today at 8:40 PM
I think Kyru sums it up well, honestly
Cer - Today at 8:41 PM
We log in, we check our TG. I scan Moderation to see if there's any Mentor-related issues I can help solve (regarding non-OSRS violations). I'll skim the Mentor forum. I check both Esper and Discord for messages, and then cycle through Google Doc projects to see if people have responded there.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:41 PM
what Kyru said, minus the mod stuff obv. That and I'm mostly on Discord after work, whipping others into shape, err, I mean, assisting in their RP stuff. Or lurk, I lurk... a lot.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:41 PM
Lots of whipping.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:41 PM
nods
Cer - Today at 8:41 PM
For Kyru: What happens when a mod should bow out, but doesn't?
For Mints: Is mentoring hard?
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:42 PM
Like any voluntary position, it has its ups and downs. There are challenges, but the reward in seeing another player flourish makes it worthwhile.
Cer - Today at 8:43 PM
We all mentor, regardless of the color of our name. It's as hard or as easy as you perceive it.
Zark - Today at 8:43 PM
I wouldn't really say it is difficult per se; we try to help, but we understand that we cannot always do so (sometimes a matter is outside our area of expertise, in which case we defer to other mentors; other times, players may be unresponsive to attempts to assist them).
Kyrusia - Today at 8:43 PM
Moderator misconduct is a serious offense and, fortunately, exceptionally rare. We're encouraged to be supportive and critical of one another when the time calls for it. A part of this means being free to bring-up our concerns we may have with one of our colleague's behavior - or pattern of behavior.
In the event of an exceptionally serious offense by a Moderator, they can, in fact, be stood down.
Cer - Today at 8:43 PM
How many of you people (Mentors) are there? (Kyru should know our count off the top of his head!)
Kyrusia - Today at 8:44 PM
18, IIRC, if you exclude me.
Cer - Today at 8:44 PM
nod Ten N&I and eight P2TM IIRC?
For Mentors, how did you end up becoming a Mentor?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:44 PM
Indeed. Strictly speaking, if you do include me, it's 11 and 9, since I am actually masked as both an N&I RP Mentor and a P2TM RP Mentor.
Cer - Today at 8:45 PM
I think I was the second batch appointed for P2TM. Someone nominated me and I went through the process. I suppose my stuff passed muster, as I was given the jacket.
Maltropia - Today at 8:45 PM
Oh, hey, I know this one! There was a vacancy which I was the best-qualified person to fill. How surprising and complicated!
Kyrusia - Today at 8:45 PM
(Just part of how the forum works regarding masking.)
Sunset - Today at 8:45 PM
I expressed some interest and someone fell for my clever ruse.
Maltropia - Today at 8:46 PM
Specifically, one of our GE&T-focussed Mentors had recently resigned and I was one of the most active and helpful members of the community at the time.
All of Sunset's ruses are clever; that's the beauty of it.(edited)
Zark - Today at 8:46 PM
Well, back when the Mentor program was getting started, my name came up among nominations and I was happy to provide manpower (IIRC there were only like three or four P2TM minties before I came along). That's it, really, sparing some mundane details
Kyrusia - Today at 8:46 PM
As for when I got my Mint Jacket: same as everyone else, really. Only thing possibly unique about it was my criticism of the Mentor Program at the time was overt and well-known in the Diplomacy board circles (now N&I).
Zark - Today at 8:46 PM
getting started on P2TM*
Cer - Today at 8:46 PM
Why are Mints called 'mint'?
Zark - Today at 8:46 PM
The color, I assume
Kyrusia - Today at 8:46 PM
The color - now colors. :stuck_out_tongue:
"Mint" for N&I, "Spearmint" for P2TM.
Maltropia - Today at 8:47 PM
'cause it's delicious.
Cer - Today at 8:47 PM
We sort of run with the pun.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:47 PM
Also because, yes, they're delicious.
Cer - Today at 8:47 PM
For Mentors, what's the best part about your job?
Other than souls.
Maltropia - Today at 8:47 PM
The pay is fantastic.
Zark - Today at 8:47 PM
can I say the TG box?
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:47 PM
whipping Ched, cause its fun
Zark - Today at 8:47 PM
in all seriousness though, it just feels nice to help people
simple answer but there y'go
Cer - Today at 8:48 PM
It has to be watching people grow into their skills, for me. I've known some since they were young. I watched them master abilities.
Sunset - Today at 8:48 PM
Shoveling shit all over Kyru.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:48 PM
When a player actually takes my advice in the spirit it is given, even if they don't adhere to it, but they at least give it due consideration - especially since they often ask for it.
Maltropia - Today at 8:48 PM
We get to feel nice and look important doing it!
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:48 PM
Cer - Today at 8:48 PM
My proudest moment has to be when Giovenith was jacketed. I remember when she was a noob.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:48 PM
Gio is best noob.
Giovenith - Today at 8:48 PM
cameo squee
Cer - Today at 8:49 PM
Yes, and about time you showed up.
To mints, do any of you think that among your other mentor peers do you think could also qualify as mods as well?
Maltropia - Today at 8:49 PM
#Sunset4Mod
Sunset - Today at 8:49 PM
Yes, but I won't say who. Don't want to poison their chances.
Cer - Today at 8:49 PM
I think G-Tech has what it takes.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:50 PM
A Mod is no one.
Zark - Today at 8:50 PM
Qualify? Sure thing
Maltropia - Today at 8:50 PM
I think a good few of the people on the team would make great mods. Sometimes I fantasise wildly about being made one myself but jeez no you'd probably all die
Kyrusia - Today at 8:50 PM
:stuck_out_tongue: (Aka: I'm not commenting due to fruit of the poisoned tree.)
Zark - Today at 8:50 PM
whether they actually have the time to devote to it or have any intention in being a moderator though, I have no idea
Cer - Today at 8:50 PM
People keep putting my name in as well. I've got a fan club, I suppose? Speaking of that -
What do Mods and Mentors do when people crush on them? Do M&M have 'creepers/stalkers'?
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:51 PM
hide behind the goat
cause its the only way
Zark - Today at 8:51 PM
not me, thankfully
Sunset - Today at 8:51 PM
I'll let you know when that happens.
Maltropia - Today at 8:51 PM
I don't think I have any. If I do, they're really stealthy about it.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:51 PM
I have had several, unfortunately. Luckily, most of them take the hint - or at least don't try too hard when I block them if they don't.(edited)
Giovenith - Today at 8:52 PM
I've had people crush on me. Luckily nothing serious, but it happens. The best you can do is put up a wall between you and them. If that doesn't help, you may need to contact some form of authorities.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:52 PM
Note, I also wasn't a Mentor or Mod for some of those. And some of them I only knew about after-the-fact.
Cer - Today at 8:52 PM
Aside from the sub-forum you're a Mentor for, which other sub-forum is your favorite?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:52 PM
IS MODERATION AN APPROPRIATE ANSWER?!
xP
Cer - Today at 8:52 PM
Heh. F7. I shitpost there.
No, Kyru! You can not into Mod for this question.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:52 PM
Kidding aside, I lurk on Gameplay more than a lot of people would think.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:53 PM
I love lurking GE&T side, a lot of them have pretty pretty storefronts
(when I have time to lurk there, that is)
Giovenith - Today at 8:53 PM
I like to scream my worthless opinions into the empty void that is General sometimes when I'm in a bad mood and want to take out my aggression on others in a socially permissible way.
I mean-
F7. Because silly games.
Maltropia - Today at 8:53 PM
I guess all of N&I is ruled out for me, isn't it? It's gotta be P2TM.
Zark - Today at 8:53 PM
I don't really lurk any forums besides P2TM presently, though I briefly lurked NS, and obviously F7 back in the day
Cer - Today at 8:54 PM
Kyru, do they require you to bow out of Mod decisions if a Mentor breaks an OSRS rule?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:55 PM
I have warned a Mentor before for a rule violation, so, no. It's generally a part of my job to keep an air of oversight on Mentors. Unless it's a personal conflict of interest, that's just a part of the job. If it is a personal conflict of interest - like, were I in the thread, did I have a dislike of the Mentor, or had I just gotten into a major conflict with one - then it would likely be expected of me to let another handle it.
Cer - Today at 8:56 PM
For all: Who's another Mod or Mentor you always find yourself working with often?
Kyrusia - Today at 8:56 PM
I work with everyone. :stuck_out_tongue:
Mincaldenteans - Today at 8:56 PM
for me its easily Swith and Cer, since I'm heavily involved in PL with them and even outside it, still Swith and Cer.
Zark - Today at 8:57 PM
Swith's probably the one I contact the most, all things considered.
I'm not in PL like Min, for the record
Maltropia - Today at 8:57 PM
In terms of Mentoring, I'd say it's Lamoni. GE&T buddies 4 lyf etc. etc.
I RP the most with Aquitayne, 'cause I share a region with him. Kinda self-explanatory there.
Giovenith - Today at 8:57 PM
Swith and Cer, because they insist on doing 85% of all Mentor work against all human limitations.
Cer - Today at 8:58 PM
I tend to work with Min, Zark, and Gio more often, mainly because we're in the same roleplayer group. I enjoyed working with Lamoni on his gameside observation contribution.
GIO.
What are attributes looked for in a Mod or Mentor? What qualities does NS want from its staff?
Maltropia - Today at 8:59 PM
Gotta have a whole lot o' guns.
Kyrusia - Today at 8:59 PM
Time, even personality, the willingness to dediate one's self, a clean record, the ability to work with others, and the ability to maintain order. Among other things.
Maltropia - Today at 8:59 PM
And money, too. Never forget the money.
Maltropia - Today at 9:00 PM
What Kyrusia said applies too, to a lesser extent.
Zark - Today at 9:00 PM
for Mentors I assume we're expected to write in English fluently
Sunset - Today at 9:00 PM
Constructive criticism, rather than just criticism. Helpful, not confrontational.
Cer - Today at 9:00 PM
Zark, your English is flawless.
Zark - Today at 9:00 PM
t'was a joke, not a poke at my language skills
Cer - Today at 9:00 PM
Kyru, what would you consider to be the single hardest part of your job?
THIRTY MINUTES
Kyrusia - Today at 9:01 PM
Also yes. You must personally bribe me with pasta, tin cans, and your eternal soul if you wish to have a (Spear)mint Jacket. That much should be obvious.
Hmm...
Maintaining a proper sorting and structure of time relative to the duties and responsibilities I have and must be met on a daily basis. I wouldn't say it's "hard," though, so much as it is "naturally taxing." Mods - and Mentors - just need breaks sometimes; time to unwind, relax, mentally collate and sort recent events and activities. People shouldn't work themselves to the bone.
Cer - Today at 9:02 PM
M&M, have any of you ever thought about writing issues for NS? Or have you written any? Or/And, on a related note, have you ever considered writing a World Assembly resolution?
Kyrusia - Today at 9:03 PM
I actually have! For both! But I just don't have the time.
Cer - Today at 9:03 PM
I- don't really get into that aspect of NS, sorry.
Sunset - Today at 9:03 PM
I think I've put in three, none got anywhere. Such is life.
Giovenith - Today at 9:03 PM
I've thought about it, I can't really think of anything good though.
Maltropia - Today at 9:03 PM
I wrote an SC Resolution once. Yohannes still has the badge.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:03 PM
Malt is obv. an over-achiever. Judge him intensely.
Zark - Today at 9:03 PM
No to both, frankly.
Cer - Today at 9:05 PM
Sorry for the delay. M&M Was there ever something you wanted to do on the site but never got the chance to?
Kyrusia - Today at 9:06 PM
Get my three primary stats to their max. e_e
Zark - Today at 9:06 PM
Besides run an RP that actually ends?
Maltropia - Today at 9:06 PM
Zark gives perfect answers.
I want to be Zark when I grow up.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:06 PM
You want to be a feline lich when you grow up? :stuck_out_tongue:
Maltropia - Today at 9:07 PM
If I can give perfect answers? I'll take it.
Cer - Today at 9:07 PM
Actually, I've always wanted to be involved in GE&T. Maybe Malt can mentor me there?
Zark - Today at 9:07 PM
Mentorception
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:07 PM
What @cer said. I've lurked there enough to actually want to do something about it, but err, time and really lack of knowledge of GE&T in general
Sunset - Today at 9:08 PM
Reach a satisfactory ending to the Yut/Arda Cold War. That's mists-of-time stuff though. Nothing currently.
Giovenith - Today at 9:08 PM
I want to run a story in which an army made of hippies beats the shit out of an evil army and saves the day in spite of everyone looking down on them and labeling them as sissies.
Maltropia - Today at 9:08 PM
Aside from things I haven't done purely because I'm lazy, the thing I most want to do is participate in an all-Mentor RP. We suggested one once and it never happened.(edited)
Cer - Today at 9:09 PM
Did you enjoy this symposium?
Giovenith - Today at 9:09 PM
Ja!
Kyrusia - Today at 9:09 PM
No. All of you leave me alone.
Zark - Today at 9:09 PM
Yeah, a lot.
Sunset - Today at 9:09 PM
Yeah, there's been some really good questions and some really insightful answers.
Maltropia - Today at 9:09 PM
Loved it.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:09 PM
(Yes. I did. It's been a pleasure.)
Zark - Today at 9:09 PM
sits on Kyru
Kyrusia - Today at 9:10 PM
:3
Cer - Today at 9:10 PM
In truth, I missed out on panel participation. Swith and I have one computer than handles Discord well. I opted to let her soar as a panel mod rather than weighing in as a panelists. I've been following it, and enjoying it as a player.
Maltropia - Today at 9:10 PM
No, Zark, you sit on the panel, not the panelist!
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:10 PM
I wish I was around during the week to enjoy it :frowning: but such in life, next year I'll come back wiht a vengeance!
Cer - Today at 9:10 PM
Twenty minutes
Kyru, do you feel this symposium has brought your Mentors closer together as a team?
Mints, do you feel ^ has brought you closer together as a team?
Maltropia - Today at 9:11 PM
Yes.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:11 PM
I believe so, yes.
Giovenith - Today at 9:11 PM
I think so.
Zark - Today at 9:11 PM
Same answer as before: yeah, a lot
Cer - Today at 9:12 PM
Yes. It's also allowed us to work closely with players we normally wouldn't.
What do you believe would be an ideal ratio of newbies to veteran RPers on the forums?
Zark - Today at 9:12 PM
My interaction with other P2TM Mentors had been relatively frequent before it, I feel, but it increased during the Sympo, and I also worked with the people from N&I so that was nice
I don't know about ratios, but I figure ideally there shouldn't be so many newbies that vets get overwhelmed That said, fresh blood is very important.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:13 PM
Not sure how to answer that question, actually...
I will say what I'd like to see, and has generally been my mission, is to encourage veteran and experienced players to be pro-active and step-in to assist newer players when it is obvious they are struggling with roleplaying or struggling to grasp the community's standards and conventions.
Maltropia - Today at 9:13 PM
I have no idea what the ratio is now. I think it's important that we always have people at various 'stages' of their journey through NS in terms of experience.
I'm not a sociologist though, thank goodness, so I'm not going to define those stages.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:14 PM
All too often I see self-professed "veterans" going into threads made by obviously new players and rather than helping, they mock or spam or threadjack, ruining that potential future roleplayer's first experience.
That helps no one.
Cer - Today at 9:14 PM
Are good players found or made, what's your opinion on that?
Kyrusia - Today at 9:14 PM
Both.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:14 PM
both
Cer - Today at 9:14 PM
Both.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:14 PM
Some players just "get it" outright. Some don't, but have the potential to.
Zark - Today at 9:15 PM
Yeah, both, especially if you consider that someone with experience outside of NS might join the community already knowing the trade.
Maltropia - Today at 9:15 PM
As with anything, some people are more naturally talented than others. Other people have to work harder at it, but they can achieve things no less fantastic.
Giovenith - Today at 9:15 PM
Good players are generally made somewhere and then may be found in other places.
Cer - Today at 9:15 PM
Personal question for M&M: how old are you? You all seem very mature.
Giovenith - Today at 9:15 PM
20.
Cer - Today at 9:15 PM
You haven't seen us at our worst.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:15 PM
8. Obv.
Maltropia - Today at 9:16 PM
I turned 23 on Day 1 of this Symposium.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:16 PM
I've clearly been violating NS rules for so long, I'm just that good.
Cer - Today at 9:16 PM
Happy Birthday, Malt!
Kyrusia - Today at 9:16 PM
(This is sarcasm.)
Maltropia - Today at 9:16 PM
It's not Day 1 anymore D:
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:16 PM
Happy Belated Mal!
Cer - Today at 9:16 PM
I'm in my 40s. Sunset and I are probably the old geezers here.
Zark - Today at 9:16 PM
20 here
Kyrusia - Today at 9:16 PM
And happy belated b-day, Malt. I'll be sure to blame you for the Symposium.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:16 PM
I've forever 30, cause its a nice age to be in.
Maltropia - Today at 9:16 PM
I take all the blame for this, Kyrusia.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:16 PM
:stuck_out_tongue:
Cer - Today at 9:17 PM
Was there ever a player or number of players that gave you pride for what they've became because you helped them?
Kyrusia - Today at 9:17 PM
Yes, but I won't call them out. They know who they are.
Cer - Today at 9:17 PM
Yes, definitely. They did all the work on their own. I was only there to lend support.
Maltropia - Today at 9:18 PM
Yes. I'm honoured to have been able to help some of the people I know become the roleplayers they are today, especially in GE&T.
Giovenith - Today at 9:18 PM
Ja, but I didn't do much, the players who really took on just needed the barest nudge. They were talented all along.
Cer - Today at 9:18 PM
Kyru what do you think of your Mentor Team?
Mentors, what do you think of your Mod?
Maltropia - Today at 9:19 PM
I guess he's okay. We'll keep him.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:19 PM
he needs more glitter for his horns
Zark - Today at 9:19 PM
He's a swell goat nods
Giovenith - Today at 9:19 PM
Demonic, yet adorable.
Cer - Today at 9:20 PM
He's not so bad. He's awfully verbose at times. :stuck_out_tongue:
Kyrusia - Today at 9:20 PM
Well that's a nice question begging me to pat everyone on the ass...
But no, kidding aside... Y'all are great bunch; I'm honored - even lucky - to work with y'all. NSRP is, in general, lucky to have you, and all of our contributors to this Symposium and the countless other players - contributor, jacketed, or not - who dedicate their time to legitimately seeking to help others on NS learn the ropes.
Cer - Today at 9:20 PM
"Will you guys be here for next year?"
Giovenith - Today at 9:20 PM
If I can!
Cer - Today at 9:20 PM
Most likely I'll be here.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:20 PM
I'll give a tentative "yes."
Maltropia - Today at 9:21 PM
If the Symposium's here, you can bet I will be too.
Cer - Today at 9:21 PM
Thoughts on things that the NSRP community as a whole (or by sub-forum if you prefer) could do/be better at?
Zark - Today at 9:22 PM
If the Symposium does go on, I'd love to participate again, for sure
Kyrusia - Today at 9:22 PM
Individual players recognizing that the only difference between Mentors and a helpful player is a colored name. Anyone can mentor, anyone can help, anyone can work with others toward bettering the NSRP community. All the jacket does is help make one more visible and help in organizing.
Cer - Today at 9:22 PM
The P2TM community makes me proud. Good players, good games. Can we improve? Yup. We do, all the time.
Zark - Today at 9:23 PM
Regarding the last question, I think it would be nice if more veteran players lent a hand to newbie players so that the community can keep on growing. This is not to say it doesn't happen, it does, lots of vets help out, but that doesn't mean that their numbers shouldn't grow
Giovenith - Today at 9:23 PM
Be more open to new ideas and concepts. Epic sagas are great, but there's nothing wrong with just having a small party or two either.
Maltropia - Today at 9:23 PM
I mentioned it in the morning panel today, that I'd love to see more unity from our community. I don't think there's a problem, per se, with how things are right now, but I feel there's been a trend over the years I've been here towards closed regions and insularism. We all share the same interests, though, and there's no real reason to not ever play in the same sandbox.
Cer - Today at 9:24 PM
Would the Mentor Team be willing to hold monthly panels like these?
(I'm supposed to add a string of "pleases" to that.)
Kyrusia - Today at 9:24 PM
It'll be under discussion. I think many of us are willing, but it'll be a question of logistics, timing, availability, and interest.
Zark - Today at 9:24 PM
Sure, I don't know how my schedule will look after vacation but if I can make it, I would
Giovenith - Today at 9:25 PM
Not really my decision. But if it were a monthly panel, it probably wouldn't be as big as this symposium.
Zark - Today at 9:25 PM
personally speaking, obviously
Sunset - Today at 9:25 PM
Discord is always here!
Maltropia - Today at 9:25 PM
It'd be cool, but as Gio points out it probably wouldn't get the same interest or turnout. I don't think we need to oversaturate.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:25 PM
never thought of a monthly, tbh, that might be interesting though not sure about time
Kyrusia - Today at 9:25 PM
Yeah. This Symposium, frankly, went remarkably well for the first time. We expected, say, a ~50 member jump in the server (to add to our ~80 who flow in and out). We saw ~140 new people become members of the server.
Cer - Today at 9:26 PM
Are there any features you wish NS would add, or any particular feature you feel would make players' lives easier?
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:26 PM
a magic recover lost post button
Cer - Today at 9:26 PM
(I saw that in our lounge. Very impressed by the numbers, Kyru. We dun gud.)
Zark - Today at 9:26 PM
I mean, I don't do much gameside, so I can't comment
Kyrusia - Today at 9:26 PM
There are actually 228 people marked as members here right now.
Zark - Today at 9:26 PM
I'll say though, now that issues are processed instantly, a way to recover an accidentally dismissed issue would be nice
Giovenith - Today at 9:27 PM
In the same vein as Min, maybe something to ask us whether or not we want to close a tab before it closes so we don't lose posts.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:27 PM
Don't forget y'all can make suggestions in Technical, just try and provide pros and potential cons to any suggestion.
Maltropia - Today at 9:27 PM
I kind of wish I could tie the expanded TG inbox on Maltropia to my other nations. Max got more blood money from me on my main RP puppet recently.
shakes his fist
TG-forwarding would be cool.
Wait, I just realised how horribly that could go wrong. Never mind.
Cer - Today at 9:28 PM
Now that the Symposium is drawing to a close: FINAL questions!
How many hours do you plan to sleep tonight after this?
What will be your first beverage after the completion of the symposium?
Will you PLEASE go post in your damn roleplays before you log off tonight??!
What kinds of offerings can we leave you all to show our gratitude?
Sunset - Today at 9:28 PM
8, Dr. Pepper, Already Done, More Dr. Pepper.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:29 PM
Over 9k.
Probably tea blood.
Maybe.
Your immortal souls, free of contractual obligations or any of this "meet me at the crossroads" nonsense I normally have to go through.
Cer - Today at 9:29 PM
Leave me rum. Leave me cigarettes. I'll drink to your health, and smoke for the betterment of my sanity. And NO, I am NOT posting in PL tonight.
Mincaldenteans - Today at 9:29 PM
6 (maybe), beer, coffee, but its Friday! and more beer or coffee
Giovenith - Today at 9:29 PM
1: As long as I like.
2: Water.
3: Make me.
4: The blood of a thousand tryhard weeaboos.
Maltropia - Today at 9:29 PM
1) There's a guy coming to collect a bed in the morning, so no more than six.
2) I'm kinda dehydrated so probably some water. Maybe a sprite.
3) Can't, got this Lit Review.
4) Little wood carvings of Kyrusia for, uh, no reason.
Zark - Today at 9:29 PM
1: I don't plan to sleep tonight, maybe a few hours tomorrow morning though
2: Water. Would be coke but we don't have any right now.
3: No promises.
4: Some catnip will do, or maybe fresh carcasses for reanimation.
Kyrusia - Today at 9:29 PM
Obv. fetishes for the Cult of the Overgoat, Malt. Obv.
Cer - Today at 9:30 PM
Before I close, I'd like to extend a thank you to our audience this week. You made these panels possible. We appreciate your questions and your support.
Thank you, Panelists! This wraps up our final panel for the 2017 NationStates Roleplay Symposium. Please, come back next year for more punishment.
NS Roleplay Symposium 2017
TOPIC: TOPIC: They're Here: Modball Panel (Oddball #3)
TIME: COMPLETED
Free at last! Thank god, we are free at last!

Free at last! Thank god, we are free at last!
